Herb of the Week: Lavender — The Nervous System's Best Friend

June 22, 2026

If there's one herb that almost everyone has encountered, it's lavender. But most people know it only as a fragrance — a candle, a lotion, a sachet in a drawer. What they don't know is that lavender is one of the most powerful nervine herbs on the planet.

What Is a Nervine?

A nervine is an herb that directly supports and calms the nervous system. In a world of chronic stress, overstimulation, and anxiety, nervines are some of the most valuable plants we have. Lavender is a nervine tonic — meaning it doesn't just sedate, it restores and strengthens the nervous system over time.

What Lavender Is Good For

  • Anxiety & stress — lavender has been shown in studies to reduce cortisol and ease generalized anxiety
  • Sleep — a few drops of lavender essential oil or a cup of lavender tea before bed can meaningfully improve sleep quality
  • Headaches — especially tension headaches; inhaling lavender or applying diluted oil to the temples can bring relief
  • Skin healing — lavender has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it excellent for burns, cuts, and irritated skin
  • Digestive calm — it can ease nervous stomach, bloating, and cramping connected to stress

How to Use It

Tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried lavender flowers in hot water for 5–10 minutes. Add honey. Drink in the evening to wind down.

Essential oil (aromatherapy): Diffuse in your bedroom at night, or place a drop on your pillow. Never apply undiluted essential oil directly to skin.

Tincture: A lavender tincture can be taken in small doses for acute anxiety or stress. Ask us at the apothecary for guidance on dosing.

Topical: Dilute lavender essential oil in a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba) at about 2% and apply to burns, insect bites, or irritated skin.

A Spiritual Note

Lavender has been used in sacred spaces for centuries — burned as incense, woven into wreaths for altars, placed under pillows to invite prophetic dreams. There's something about this plant that invites stillness. In a world that demands constant motion, lavender is an invitation to just… be.
