Herb of the Week: Rose Hips — Vitamin C From the Hedgerow

During the Second World War, when citrus couldn't reach Britain, the government sent children into the hedgerows to gather rose hips. Millions of pounds were collected and made into syrup to keep the population from scurvy. That wartime remedy was ancient knowledge rediscovered: the fruit of the rose is one of the richest vitamin C sources on earth.

What Are Rose Hips?

Rose hips are the fruit that forms after a rose flower is pollinated — the swollen, red-orange seed pod left behind when the petals fall. Wild roses (Rosa canina, Rosa rugosa, and others) produce the best hips. They ripen in September and sweeten after the first frost.

What Rose Hips Are Good For

  • Immune support — exceptionally high in vitamin C, plus bioflavonoids that help the body absorb and use it
  • Joint pain — clinical trials show rose hip powder reduces osteoarthritis pain and stiffness, likely through a compound called GOPO
  • Skin health — vitamin C supports collagen production; rose hip seed oil is a celebrated topical for scars and aging skin
  • Antioxidant — rich in lycopene, beta-carotene, and polyphenols
  • Gentle digestion and urinary support — mildly astringent and diuretic

How to Use It

Tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried, seeded hips in hot (not boiling) water for 10–15 minutes. Tart, fruity, beautiful with hibiscus or cinnamon. High heat destroys vitamin C, so don't boil.

Syrup: Simmer fresh hips, strain carefully (the seed hairs are irritating), and sweeten with honey. A spoonful daily through winter.

Powder: The form used in arthritis studies — add to smoothies.

Seed oil: Applied topically to the face and to scars.

A Spiritual Note

We celebrate the rose for its bloom and forget it entirely once the petals fall. But the plant's real generosity comes after — quietly, in the fruit, when no one is looking. There is something to honor in that: the value of what remains once the beautiful part is over.
