Thyme is the herb you'll wish you'd stocked in October. As soon as the first chest cold moves through a household, thyme tea, thyme honey, and thyme steam become the most useful things in the kitchen. Germany's Commission E — the world's most rigorous herbal regulatory body — officially approves thyme for bronchitis and coughs. Your grandmother could have told them that.
What Is Thyme?
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a low, woody Mediterranean herb in the mint family with tiny aromatic leaves. Ancient Greeks burned it as incense; Roman soldiers bathed in it for courage; medieval women embroidered sprigs of it onto knights' scarves. Its essential oil, thymol, is still an active ingredient in commercial mouthwashes and antiseptics.
What Thyme Is Good For
- Coughs and bronchitis — an expectorant and antispasmodic that loosens mucus and calms the cough reflex; clinically studied in combination with ivy leaf
- Respiratory infections — thymol and carvacrol are strongly antibacterial and antiviral
- Sore throat — antiseptic gargle
- Digestion — antimicrobial and carminative; helpful for gas and mild digestive infections
- Oral health — antibacterial against the organisms that cause gum disease and bad breath
- Immune support — high in vitamin C and antioxidant compounds
How to Use It
Tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried thyme (or a few fresh sprigs) covered for 10 minutes — covering keeps the volatile oils in. Add honey. Drink 2–3 cups daily during a cough.
Thyme honey: Fill a jar with fresh thyme, cover with raw honey, and let sit for two weeks. Take by the spoonful or stir into tea. Make it now, before you need it.
Steam: A handful of thyme in a bowl of hot water; drape a towel and breathe for 5–10 minutes to open the chest.
Tincture or syrup: Concentrated forms for acute bronchial illness.
A Spiritual Note
The Greeks associated thyme with courage — thymos meant spirit, the breath of life itself. It's fitting that a plant named for breath became the great medicine for breathing. When the chest is tight and the air feels thin, thyme reminds the body how to open again.
