Valerian has a reputation. It smells terrible — earthy, pungent, a little like old socks. But ask anyone who has used it for sleep, and they'll tell you the smell doesn't matter at all once you've had a full night of deep, restful sleep for the first time in months.
What Is Valerian?
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering plant native to Europe and Asia, naturalized in North America. Its name may come from the Latin valere — "to be strong" or "to be well." The root is the medicinal part, and it has been used as a sleep aid and anxiety remedy since at least ancient Greece. Hippocrates described its uses. Galen prescribed it for insomnia. It has never really gone out of fashion.
What Valerian Is Good For
- Sleep onset — helps you fall asleep faster, particularly for those with racing minds at bedtime
- Sleep quality — research shows improved deep sleep and reduced nighttime waking
- Anxiety — acts on GABA receptors similarly to benzodiazepines, but gently and without dependency risk
- Muscle tension — relaxes smooth and skeletal muscle; helpful for tension headaches and menstrual cramps
- Stress — takes the edge off acute stress; useful before high-pressure situations
How to Use It
Take it 30–60 minutes before bed. Valerian is not a sedative in the pharmaceutical sense — it doesn't knock you out. It quiets the nervous system so sleep can come naturally.
Capsule: Most convenient form. 300–600mg of root extract before bed.
Tincture: Fast-acting; 30–60 drops in water before bed.
Tea: Steep 1 teaspoon of dried root for 10–15 minutes. The smell and taste are strong — combine with peppermint or lemon balm to improve palatability.
Note: Valerian builds its effects over 2–4 weeks of consistent use. Give it time before deciding it doesn't work.
A Spiritual Note
Sleep is not a passive state. It is when the body repairs, the mind processes, and the soul integrates. To deprive yourself of sleep is to deprive yourself of one of the most important healing experiences available to you every single night. Valerian is an invitation: come back to rest. Everything else can wait.
